Colour Bloom - Collection 010

Inspired by springtime gardens, bountiful blooms, and colourful names.

Rose Bloom – I was inspired by the brilliant apple green of Vincent van Gough's Pink Roses in a Vase, which depicts an avalanche of roses against a brilliant apple green. I love the simplicity and free flowing brushstrokes of his painting, and wanted to achieve this with this small work. The green references back to Emerald, while not strictly matching.

Aureolin – For this collection, I had two sources of inspiration. First was the history of some unique and interesting colours, like Aureolin. Aureolin is an alternative name for Cobolt Yellow, which in french is Jaune de Cobolt. Aureolin was discovered in 1831, and comes from the Latin word aurereus which means golden. My second source of inspiration was my front garden - this yellow iris blooming in winter was the exact shade of Aureolin..

Pink Bloom – I designed Pink Bloom to bring a simple bold graphic element to the Colour Bloom series. It draws reference to the black text, and also pink floral detailing in Emerald.

Emerald – Emerald green was valued by painters in the 19th century for its vivid tone, however it was also extremely toxic! Other names for emerald include Paris green, Veronese green, Schweinfurt green, Mitis green, Vienna green and Imperial green. Emerald green to me is a colour that stops me in my tracks, it is so rich and eye catching. My second source of inspiration was my front garden - these little bell flowers were so sweet, and their rich pink was the perfect foreground for an emerald backdrop.

Vase Bloom – I was inspired by Matisse for this work. To tie the whole Colour Bloom collection together, I needed a bold graphic design that referenced all of the colours in each work. So the pink vase links to Pink Bloom, the blue flowers link to the blue detail in Rose Bloom, the yellow flowers link to Aureolin, the red and magenta flowers reference Vermilion and the green leaves link to Emerald.

Vermilion – I am always drawn to Vermilion - for its unique name and vivid red-orange hue. The name Vermilion derives from the Latin vermiculus which translates to “a little worm,” which is a cochineal insect from which crimson dyes were obtained. My second source of inspiration was the magenta and pinks of these cosmos growing in my garden that were the perfect pair with a Vermilion background.

• Acrylic is much safer than glass as it is less prone to breakage, and it is also lighter than traditional glass. Because it is acrylic, it can easily scratch and requires special care when cleaning and handling. If cleaning, only use a lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid using glass cleaners that contain ammonia or alcohol, as this can damage the artwork.
