Sculptural Vessel Artwork
About Leda
Leda is a sculptural vessel created in collaboration between artists' Penny Brooshooft and Emilie Maguin.
This vessel draws on the myth of Leda and the swan, referencing themes of transformation, power, and encounter within Greek mythology. The painted inscription “even in Arcadia there am I” alludes to Et in Arcadia Ego, introducing the idea that mortality and presence persist even within idealised landscapes. Floral elements and abstract organic motifs extend the Arcadian setting, situating the scene within a constructed vision of nature. The swan and figure of Leda are integrated into the surface, combining narrative imagery with decorative pattern, while the vessel form holds these elements within a unified, symbolic composition.
This vessel is thoughtfully handcrafted from recycled cardboard and paper, transforming everyday waste into an enduring sculptural artwork. From breaking down cardboard and paper into a pulp, mixing the pulp with binders, moulding form and sanding, this piece has been uniquely built by Penny, and painted by Emilie. This vessel reflects a commitment to slow sustainable design.
