About 'Anthora'
Anthora is a contemporary figurative portrait made entirely from recycled cardboard. The work begins with a hand-built cardboard armature, which forms both the flat surface and the three-dimensional raised outer frame. This structure is then coated in my Cardcrete medium, a material made with 100% recycled cardboard made from scratch, creating a solid, textural base that has the feel of sculpted or built material rather than canvas.
The surface is finished with an acrylic plaster paint to achieve a chalked patina, matte and worn, similar to aged walls or weathered fresco. A half floral ornamental motif decorates the frame, referencing decorative motifs from the past.
As the work is sculptural, it is not completely flat. This piece actually dried with a convexity to the center of it.
