About 'Malathos'
Malathos is a contemporary figurative portrait made entirely from recycled cardboard. The work begins with a hand-built cardboard armature, which forms both the flat surface and the three-dimensional raised outer frame. This structure is then coated in my Cardcrete medium, a material made with 100% recycled cardboard made from scratch, creating a solid, textural base that has the feel of sculpted or built material rather than canvas.
The inspiration for this piece was a jeweled malachite pattern in this beautiful deep pink. Marble and stone in Roman buildings signified durability, wealth, and the intention for a structure to endure for generations, and in European frescoes, walls are often hand painted to look like marble. I've taken reference to this idea as a design for the frame on this work, and layered washes of plaster to give it an aged patina.
The internal structure of this work is made entirely from Ikea packaging that I collected from my local community.
