Cardcrete Relief Wall Sculpture Artwork
About 'Lauralia'
Lauralia is a contemporary figurative portrait made entirely from recycled cardboard. The work begins with a hand-built cardboard armature, which forms both the flat surface and the three-dimensional raised outer frame. This structure is then coated in my Cardcrete medium, a material made with 100% recycled cardboard made from scratch, creating a solid, textural base that has the feel of sculpted or built material rather than canvas.
This artwork was inspired by the laurel wreath crowns often worn in Roman times and depicted in fresco portraits, the leaf pattern weaving around the frame also echoes this sentiment.
This artwork was made from a stack of cardboard padding collected from my box supplier. The padding is used between their products, and is a waste product that often gets shipped off to Malaysia for recycling.
As this work is sculptural, it is not completely level and flat - this work actually dried with a slightly raised edge on the left hand side, which I think just adds to the sculptural quality of the work.
