How to Transfer Your Design

You’ll need:

• Your printed design
• A soft 2B pencil
• Masking tape
• Your chosen surface
• The back of a spoon or another smooth, hard object

Step 1 — Print

Download and print your chosen design on A4 paper using your home inkjet printer.

Step 2 — Apply pencil

Turn the printed page over. Using a soft 2B pencil, generously shade over the back of the design, covering all the lines you want to transfer. A 2B pencil contains relatively soft graphite, making it ideal for this technique.

Step 3 — Position and secure

Place the paper pencil-shaded side down onto your chosen surface, positioning the design exactly where you want it. Secure the edges with masking tape to prevent the paper from moving.

Step 4 — Burnish

Using the back of a pencil, pen or another smooth, hard object, firmly rub over the lines of the design. This process is called burnishing: applying pressure and friction to transfer the graphite from the back of the paper onto the surface beneath.

Step 5 — Reveal your design

Carefully lift a corner of the paper to check that the lines have transferred. Once you’re happy with the result, remove the paper to reveal your outline, ready to be developed in your own way.
